A Fable

Jun.20, 2005 in Content 3 Comments

Once a bunch of friends decided to start an ISP, using seed money promised by the parents of one of them. They made a plan and the plan was approved and they got to work. But they didn’t count on only part of the funding coming through, and that in dribs and drabs. Despite the slowness of the funds coming, the friends dutifully followed their plan, though sporadicly, as the infrequent arrival of the money in small chunks meant they had to wait around without pay before they could implement each stage of the plan. A business lease was signed, and an ISDN line was hired. But after they incurred the ongoing costs of the ISDN line and lease, the money dried up! And the promised paperwork did not arrive. What’s more, unknown parties appeared in the company papers, that were never part of the original agreements, and later ficticious company meetings allegedly occured that the directors were unaware of. Still, the friends worked on without pay, contributing more of their meager resources into making the business work. Not everyone worked as hard as they could have, but a lot of effort was expended to make the unexpectedly puny resources go far. Despite the dishonesty and cowardly behavior of the investor, as his weak child dithered and vanished into a land of role playing fantasy, the business very nearly attained vaiability and sustainability, until the weak child stole into the office and disconnected all the servers.

Moral of the story: Get It In Writing

or you could end up an unwitting part of some dodgy tax avoidance scheme.
